{"id":753,"date":"2016-08-10T10:00:33","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T17:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.laurarothafel.com\/?p=753"},"modified":"2016-06-30T12:07:54","modified_gmt":"2016-06-30T19:07:54","slug":"back-to-school-reminder-social-graces-and-kindness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.laurarothafel.com\/?p=753","title":{"rendered":"Back to School Reminder- Social Graces and Kindness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"docs-internal-guid-5650c821-e7b7-0c0e-d8da-bd4410b78848\" dir=\"ltr\">Now is a great time to remind your kids about social graces and kindness. \u00a0Going back to school is often filled with the challenges of new friends, teachers and personalities.\u00a0 Being uncomfortable with the unfamiliar can cause kids to talk about people and situations in a negative way.\u00a0 This has the potential to influence the perception of others perhaps unjustly.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0Children don\u2019t have the <em><strong>capacity to really think through all the possible consequences of their actions.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Their friendships often fluctuate and can have several &#8220;best friends&#8221; in any given month. When feelings get hurt and betrayal is felt there is an urge to reciprocate the pain which often comes in the form of <strong>name calling, teasing,<\/strong> and \/or<strong> physical altercations<\/strong>,\u00a0 and now <strong>&#8220;cyber bullying.\u201d<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-758\" title=\"Cyber Bully\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laurarothafel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Cyber-bully1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0Monitoring behavior has become even more <strong>complex<\/strong> with the use of <strong>technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One problem is that many adults are setting <strong>bad examples<\/strong> by sending inappropriate pictures, making negative statements about others including their employers and coworkers and forwarding emails and texts that were meant to be private.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And, children learn from what they see and experience.\u00a0 Unfortunately, there are too many negative role models and not enough discussion regarding the unintended consequences.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Be sure to check in with your children and <strong>be aware of any significant behavioral changes or signs of depression.\u00a0<\/strong> Ask them about their friends and relationships.\u00a0 Be aware of changes in self-esteem or evidence of physical harm.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><em>Listen carefully.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And talk with your kids about using caution when sharing information about others or themselves.
